The Institute conducts research to the greatest extent possible in the discipline of linguistics, and to a lesser extent, in the disciplines of literary and cultural studies.

Fields of significant exploration within the institute include world civilizations and speech technology.

Linguistics research is carried out in almost all  departments within the institute, particularly in the subfields of general, applied and comparative linguistics. Language and literature research of the various peoples of the Europe, Asia and Africa is a component contributing to the synthesis of these studies that constitute ethnolinguistics

The scope of the research of the Institute of Ethnolinguistics is determined by the scientific activities of the departments. Generally speaking, this scope continues to be shaped by projects implemented by individual departments.
