St Martin’s Croissant is one of the most recognizable and undoubtedly one of the tastiest hand-made symbols of Poznań during the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, and throughout the year. Usually the City celebrates on November 11th with a combination of Święty Marcin Street Festival and some military parades.
An estimated over one million of the crescent-shaped, white poppy-seed pastries will be eaten that day and the following weekend in and around Poznań.
The Croissant Museum is the place for everyone who wants to understand the tradition of making the St.Martin’s croissant and its origins.
Fun fact: Saint Martin was an ancient Roman knight on a white horse and later a bishop of Tours (France), named a saint who according to legend, shared a half of his cloak with a street-beggar in the depth of winter thus becoming a symbol of sharing and giving, just like his more famous contemporary, Saint Nicolas (Santa Claus). St.Martin’s shrine in Tours is also a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Legend holds that long, long time ago a young Poznań baker had a dream about St.Martin’s horse losing a horseshoe which he found on his doorstep. Ever since he decided to promote giving crescent-shaped pastries out to the poor of Poznań… Was it really the case? Let’s find out together on 9 November at the Croissant Museum!
Fun fact: one of the main streets of Poznan is named after St.Martin (Święty Marcin) and the building at Św.Marcin 78 where the AMU International Office is found was named Collegium Martineum.
