The Astronomical Observatory Institute, AMU Faculty of Physics cordially invites you to a seminar. The lectures are held every week, on Thursdays at 1 p.m. in the building of the Astronomical Observatory of the Adam Mickiewicz University (Słoneczna 36, Poznań)
A new feature: to enable individuals from outside Poznan to participate in our seminars, we will provide links to MS Teams sessions under selected lectures. To join us in video conference mode (without logging in), please click on the link in your Google Chrome browser (it may not work in others), enter your name and surname and wait to be admitted by the organiser. Alternatively, you can use the independent MS Teams app.
Date: 14 December 2023

The keynote will be given by: Dr Paolo Tanga (Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur, Nice, France)
Seminar paper title: "Investigating the physical properties of asteroids using Gaia astrometry".
Abstract:
The traditional view of a clear separation between asteroid astrometry and observations to determine asteroids' physical properties (for example, shape and rotation) is challenged by data collected by ESA's Gaia mission. The reason is that Gaia astrometry, at least for some asteroids, includes a signature of effects related to their orientation in space, size or the presence of satellites. In such situations, optimal use of the data involves optimal modelling of such physical features, a complex task whose implications have not yet been fully exploited. In this lecture, I will discuss in particular the possible signature of binarity, which is the subject of an ongoing search. I will also remind you of Gaia's more indirect but powerful influence on the asteroid occultation technique, which has never been so powerful before.
