Dutch movie night / Filmavond: The Misfortunates

Hello, hello, any film buffs around? We're inviting you to the Dutch movie night!

Showing: The Misfortunates

When? 21 March, 6:30 pm (Aula)

Description:

Thirteen-year-old Gunther Strobbe lives with his father and three uncles at his grandmother's house. Every day he's confronted with massive amounts of alcohol, hitting on women and shameless vanity. No one questions that Gunther will share this fate. Or will he be able to avoid such misfortune?

The Misfortunates is the third feature film by Felix van Groeningen. The film is based on Dimitri Verhulst's novel of the same title. Verhulst's autobiographical story caused a sensation when it appeared in print in 2006. Since then, the book has not only been showered with literary awards but also has become a new literary sensation of the first decade of the 21st century, thanks to readers in Flanders and the Netherlands. Not coincidentally, Verhulst and van Groeningen concluded that the film would be far superior to the book. They made this decision even before the first day on set. Who are we to question it?

Trigger warning list: domestic violence, heavy alcohol use, sexual content & nudity, depictions of bodily fluids.
