“Qualitative methods and research ethics for linguistic justice, equity and inclusion”
Abstract: In community-based ethical models of linguistic research, linguists engage in intentional and inclusive collaborations with language users and their communities. Such models can also position scholars to take decolonizing, inclusive, social justice- and equity-oriented approaches to research that recognize the linguistic agency of language users and their communities, position them as linguistic experts, and foreground their goals and priorities. I share three projects that exemplify community-based research partnerships as pathways for advancing linguistic justice, equity, and inclusion: Talking College, a collaborative multi-year qualitative study of Black students’ sociolinguistic experiences; a National Science Foundation-funded Build & Broaden initiative to form a research network of Black faculty in linguistics, and Decolonizing Linguistics and Inclusion in Linguistics, two collections that present social justice-oriented, research-based models for achieving broader participation and inclusion in linguistics.
