Emesto Macaro is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Oxford in the Department of Education. His research focuses on second language learning strategies and on the interaction between teachers and learners in second language classrooms or in classrooms where English is the Medium of Instruction. Title: Ten important questions that English Medium Instruction research needs to answer

Abstract: The exponential growth of English Medium Instruction (EMI) both in Higher globally has resulted in a similar growth of empirical research on the subject. Of necessity this research to date has been single institution-oriented and lacking a clear research agenda that a more established community of practice might have ensured. Moreover, the research agenda appears to have been appropriated by applied linguists which may mean that we are experiencing a somewhat one-sided perspective. In this talk I will identify and discuss ten important research questions that still, in my view, need answering and some research strategies that would make the research outcomes more convincing.
