This month, the Faculty of English invites you to a lecture by Robert Lew on 'ChatGPT as a lexicographer'.The event will be held on 18 October (Wednesday) in the Aula, Collegium Heliodori Święcicki.
Abstract:
Creating high-quality dictionary entries has been a meticulous and time-consuming process, but current developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) could help to speed up this process significantly. I used ChatGPT to create COBUILD-style English monolingual entries and evaluated entries created in terms of the quality of definitions, examples, and entries overall. The evaluation was done by four international experts who were given AI-generated and original COBUILD entries in randomized order. The origin of the entries was not disclosed until after the evaluation. The results indicate that AI-generated definitions are comparable in quality to those created by human lexicographers, while AI-generated examples and entries overall receive lower ratings. The study also explores the possibility of fine-tuning AI models based on expert feedback to enhance their performance.

Rober Lew is a professor at the Lexicography and Lexicology Research Unit. His current research interests centre around dictionary use. He has worked as a practical lexicographer and is the Editor of the International Journal of Lexicography.
