40 years of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz

On Tuesday, 17 October, the Faculty of Pedagogy and Arts of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz inaugurated a new academic year and the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz.

- The origins of the Adam Mickiewicz University's presence in Kalisz date back to the 1980s,' recalls Professor Piotr Łuszczykiewicz, Dean of the Faculty. - One could jokingly suggest it all began on the American Independence Day in the year from Orwell's book, On 4 July 1984, by an agreement between the rector of the AMU and the governor of Kalisz, the Department of Elementary Education in Kalisz of the Institute of Pedagogy of the AMU in Poznań was established, adds Prof. Piotr Łuszczykiewicz.

In 1987, the Department of Visual Education was established, and in 1988, the Department of Music Education began operating. In 1991, the Pedagogical-Arts College in Kalisz of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań was founded and transformed in 1996 into the Pedagogical-Arts Institute in Kalisz.

On 25 March 2002, the Senate of the Adam Mickiewicz University created the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts, which, as of 2018, is also a Branch of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz.

In 2009, a new wing of the Faculty was opened at Nowy Świat 28-30. The building houses a conference and concert hall with over 400 seats, a university art gallery, and one of the most modern academic libraries in Poland.

In 2014, a second wing of the building was built, containing multimedia, design and music rooms, as well as, a chamber music hall. At the same time, the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts handed over two previously used buildings to the City of Kalisz, limiting the location to the extensive campus.

The following fields of study are offered by the Faculty: pedagogy, preschool and early childhood pedagogy, artistic education in the musical arts, artistic education in the visual arts, English philology with pedagogy, English philology in education, Polish philology, protection of cultural assets, scientific information and library science.

The Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts publishes the prestigious journal Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching. It is a beneficiary of the University of Tomorrow operational programme and carries out Erasmus exchanges. In the network of Polish universities, "Excellence Initiative - Research University", the Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts supports the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences area. It also participates in the European campus within the EPICUR consortium.

- The Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts in Kalisz at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has a unique specificity, combining science, didactics, art and a remarkable atmosphere of the interpenetration of the humanities - philological, pedagogical, cultural - music, visual arts and media in many specialities, emphasises the Dean of the WP-A, Prof. Piotr Łuszczykiewicz.
