AI factory in Poznan - AMU joins the PIAST AI consortium

digital graphic announces the expansion of the EuroHPC AI Factories Ecosystem. A central AI-themed cube with the EuroHPC logo is connected to six AI initiatives: JAIF (Germany), AI2F (France), AI:AT (Austria), BRAIN++ (Bulgaria), SLAIF (Slovenia), and PIAST (Poland). The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking logo is displayed at the bottom, with a March 2025 date

An Artificial Intelligence factory based on high-powered computers will be built in Poznan. The European Commission has announced the results of the competition: PLN 200 million in funding for its creation was awarded to the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre. The PSNC-led Consortium called PIAST AI includes Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, jointly with Poznan University of Technology and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun.

A total of €1.3 million will flow directly to AMU. The university will spend the funds on research, expertise and training. AMU is already developing AI research within the Artificial Intelligence Centre and at the Faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics and Astronomy.

- "We are pleased that we will have the opportunity to provide education with tools for advanced research in artificial intelligence," says Prof. Michał Banaszak, AMU ice-Rector for Digitization and Business Cooperation.

PSNC and AMU are united by an agreement from September last year on the establishment of a Quantum Technologies Consortium in Quantum Computing, Machine Learning and Simulation. Among the aims of the Consortium is the development of a common curricular and organisational framework for raising competence and disseminating achievements in the development of quantum technologies and their applications.

In 2023, an interdisciplinary Quantum Informatics degree course was launched at AMU, combining knowledge from physics and computer science. The studies educate specialists with programming competence and in-depth knowledge of physics disciplines prepared to implement and develop quantum technologies.

The AMU is also home to the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, aiming to conduct world-class research in artificial intelligence and implement it in the economy to enhance the quality of life.

According to the Ministry of Digitalisation, the AI Factories initiative is a key element of the EU's strategy to transform Europe into a global leader in trustworthy artificial intelligence. Announced by the European Commission in September 2024, it envisages the creation of a network of specialised research and development centres, integrating EuroHPC supercomputers, data resources and scientific and industrial competencies.

The funds from the European Commission will increase the pool of PLN 340 million provided by the Polish Government for the development of AI Factories.
