AMU awarded for equality work

Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań (AMU) has been honoured with the ‘True Equity Award’ - an award recognising equality activities. According to a letter sent by the chapter to AMU Rector, Professor Bogumiła Kaniewska, the award is given to the university under her leadership: "Your election as Rector on 29 June 2020 was a landmark event in the history of over a century of the university and academic Poznań. The new authorities created a friendly space for pro-equality changes: formal and legal, at the level of culture, awareness and everyday life of scholars, while initiating various activities to build anti-discrimination policies, standards and procedures".

As the Award Chapter emphasises: "We nominate for the award for acknowledging the value of gender equality, the courage to introduce systemic changes, consistency and substantive and timely responses to the needs of the academic community in the sphere of equal treatment and anti-discrimination. As a scientific, educational and employer institution, AMU leads by example, sets trends, and bears witness to the possible actions and benefits of progress in gender equality in Polish higher education and the world of work".

- ‘The Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, considers it a great value to care for equality and diversity,’ said the AMU Vice-Rector, Prof. Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk, who received the statuette on behalf of the Rector, Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska. - "We want every person at our university, regardless of gender, political views, religion, skin colour, sexual orientation or background, to feel equally comfortable. This award proves that our efforts are bearing fruit and are visible,’ Professor Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk added.

The award chapter is composed of individuals from SENSE consulting, the Women's History Museum, the Women's Time Foundation and the I-Teacher Foundation. The group appreciated the following AMU activities: a series of seminars entitled "AMU Women's Laboratory", and other activities of the "When Science is a Woman" team, monitoring of working conditions and equal treatment, research into sexual harassment behaviour, the publication "The Language of Equality at AMU in Poznań", as well as the organisation of numerous conferences, such as "Scientific excellence has no gender" or "I will become a Nobel Prize winner. Women in science". The chapter also noted the operation of centres, scientific circles and associations focused on gender (in)equality and appreciated the development of an advocacy and proxy system ‘creating an equal, inclusive and anti-discriminatory academia fabric".

The award ceremony was held on 26 November, during the conference "Leaders & HR 4 Equality. Different paths to equality in practice".
