AMU in the UNESCO UNITWIN 'Culture in Emergencies' network

The UNESCO UNITWIN "Culture in Emergencies" network will be launched soon. It is the first network of its kind in the world to address the issue of preserving cultural heritage in emergencies.

We are delighted to announce that the application of the two institutions that will co-lead the network (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and the University of Technology in Sydney) has been granted by UNESCO. The project will be implemented with the support of the AMU Faculty of Law and Administration.

On the part of the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan, the team includes Dr Alicja Jagielska-Burduk (coordinator) and Prof. Wojciech Szafrański. From the University of Technology Sydney, Prof Ana Vrdoljak will be the project coordinator.

The network will consist of Berkeley University, Institute of European Studies, UNESCO Regional Office for the Pacific States, Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, University of Technology Sydney, Mexican Center of Uniform Law, African Institute of International Law, and Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage.

The UNITWIN 'Culture in Emergencies' network will be charged with:

  • researching the role of culture, the practical preservation of cultural heritage and the protection of cultural diversity in emergencies, including conflicts and disasters resulting from natural and man-made hazards, to promote peace and sustainable development,
  • research and analysis in the field of conservation, restoration of cultural heritage and building the resilience of societies,
    actively support the implementation of legal and non-legal tools related to cultural heritage and cultural diversity in the context of
  • emergency preparedness, protection and recovery.
