AMU has received approval to launch medical studies at the Institute of Medical Sciences, which operates at the AMU branch in Piła.
The Minister of Science and Higher Education, following consultation with the Minister of Health and the Polish Accreditation Committee, granted permission to establish a six-year medical degree programme.
"I am grateful to everyone who supported us in our efforts to expand the range of courses offered by AMU," says AMU Rector Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska, adding, "We are delighted with this positive decision. Our University has extensive experience in managing large educational projects, along with the necessary facilities and staff. In March, the rules for the first year of enrolment will be announced. The training of future doctors will begin in October."
The project to launch medical studies in Piła by the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, is a response to the needs of the subregion, whose capital is this city. The last vacancy count, conducted only in public healthcare facilities in several districts of northern Greater Poland, revealed that there was a shortage of nearly 240 doctors. The AMU's efforts are strongly supported by, among others, the Local Government of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, the local governments of the Piła subregion and the Governor of Greater Poland. Of significance was also the fact that the AMU has a state-of-the-art building in Piła, quickly adaptable to the requirements of medical studies. Additionally, medical studies are in high demand, making this a good decision for future students as well. The programme has the potential to enrich both the region and the Polish academic system.
"It is a natural step in the development of AMU. It is not an experiment, but a well-thought-out decision," emphasises Prof. Tadeusz Wallas, AMU Rector's Representative for University Development.
In September last year, a facility featuring a dissecting room, a pathomorphology department, and dedicated premises for the anatomy department was opened in Piła. The modernised and extended building is located on the premises of the Stanisław Staszic Specialist Hospital in Piła, near the Greater Poland Oncology Centre branch. The facility is owned by the Hospital and will be used by the University. The University has already purchased some of the equipment necessary for such education.
The Multidisciplinary Medical Simulation Centre at the Piła branch of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, located on Kołobrzeska Street, will play a significant role in conducting studies within the planned discipline.
Once the education of future doctors begins, we shall start creating facilities for conducting clinical classes and professional internships for students. Agreements have already been established with nearly 20 hospitals and healthcare institutions.
