AMU Polar Station 'Petuniabukta' has joined the POLARIN programme

The AMU Polar Station 'Petuniabukta' at Spitsbergen has become one of the partners of the POLARIN project, a network coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute. The focus of POLARIN will be to promote interdisciplinary research responding to scientific challenges in both polar regions.

As described by Krzysztof Rymer, head of the AMU Polar Station, "'Petuniabukta' has already been participating in the EU-funded INTERACT project for several years. One of its greatest successes has been the establishment of a network of Arctic and high-altitude stations, developing common standards of operation and providing space for the best scientists from all over the world. The POLARIN project is based on similar assumptions but is not limited to stations located in the northern hemisphere", says Krzysztof Rymer. - "The beneficiaries can also use Antarctic stations, research vessels or access to databases and ice cores. For Adam Mickiewicz University Polar Station, it is a unique opportunity to gain even greater recognition in the international scientific community and, thanks to the funding provided for cross-border exchanges, to attract international research groups to conduct scientific research based on the Adam Mickiewicz University research infrastructure on Spitsbergen", adds the Station's manager.

The POLARIN project is funded by the European Union under the HORIZON-INFRA programme. Over the next five years, the EU will provide €14.6 million in funding. POLARIN is scheduled to be officially launched today.
