Magdalena Baer, PhD, from the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University, is a beneficiary of an international research grant entitled "Multi-word Expressions in Croatian - Lexicological, Computational Linguistic and Glottodidactic Approach".
Doctor Baer shall conduct her research at Institut za hrvatski jezik i jezikoslovlje under the supervision of Dr Sc. Goranka Blagus Bartolec.
The objective of the project is to create a publicly accessible repository of multi-word expressions of the Croatian language online, along with a description of their grammatical and semantic features. The data entered into the database would be a valuable source for:
various linguistic studies,
improving corpus-based tools for the recognition of multi-word expressions (general and specialised collocations, idioms, proverbs, fragments, grammatical links),
conducting research at the contrastive level for translation, creating parallel corpora, and teaching and learning Croatian as a second language.
The categorisation of plural expressions will be based on existing theoretical descriptions of multi-word phrases, especially on those setting contemporary trends for the study of such words in the 21st century, involving the use and improvement of corpus and computer technologies.
The project aims to develop five databases - a general database of multi-word expressions, a database of idioms, a database of Croatian proverbs, a database of multi-word expressions in Croatian as a second and foreign language, and database of verb collocations in Croatian, Polish, German and English.
