32 letters exchanged between Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Albert Einstein, aged between 1911 and 1932, can be read - along with commentaries - in a new book publication. Professor Tomasz Pospieszny of the AMU Faculty of Chemistry participated actively in the publishing of the correspondence.
"The two eminent scientists’ correspondence offers a glimpse into their mutual relations based on sincere admiration, respect and friendship. In 32 letters, Skłodowska and Einstein discuss their research and the situation of European science, but also describe everyday matters, sharing personal thoughts." - the publishers announce.
‘’Publishing Maria Skłodowska-Curie's correspondence with Albert Einstein for the first time is a landmark event. It is with exceptional emotion to read these letters, exchanged over more than twenty years," - wrote the Nobel laureate's granddaughter and grandson, Prof Hélène Langevin-Joliot and Prof Pierre Joliot.
The letters exchanged between Albert Einstein and Marie Skłodowska-Curie "are a deposition to the unique relationship between the two great scientists," says Professor Hanoch Gutfreund, the keeper of Einstein's legacy and a theoretical physicist involved in the publication. "However, the foundation of their enduring friendship and mutual appreciation was not just their shared scientific interest, but their mutual admiration for each other's dedication to human values and social commitment," the professor acknowledged.
AMU Professor Tomasz Pospieszny, a chemist, biographer of Maria Skłodowska-Curie and populariser of her scientific achievements, and Professor Jan Piskurewicz, a historian and researcher of the history of science in the 19th and 20th centuries in Poland and Europe, contributed to the publication of the correspondence between Skłodowska and Einstein. The idea for the publication came from Dr Ewa Łabno-Falęcka. The English-language version is due to be published this spring.
