On behalf of the Organisers, we cordially invite you to the seventh (penultimate) lecture of the AMU Invited Lecture Series in MODERN CATALYSIS 2, which will be held ONLINE on Wednesday, 7 June 2023 at 10.00 a.m. The speech will be given by Prof Mariola Tortosa of the Departamento de Química Orgánica and Institute for Advanced Research in Chemical Sciences (IAdChem). She is also one of the editors of Organic Letters.
Lecture title: Catalysis for increased complexity: stereoselective synthesis of sp3-rich building blocks
Link to the meeting: MS TEAMS
Mariola Tortosa obtained her bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in 1999. She then joined the group of Dr R. Fernández de la Pradilla at the Instituto de Química Orgánica General (Madrid, Spain) to carry out her thesis work on the development of new asymmetric methods using chiral sulfoxides. In 2004, she received the Lilly Award for doctoral students. In 2005, she moved to The Scripps Research Institute in Florida (USA) to work as a post-doctoral fellow under Prof. Diels-Alder. Her research in Florida was directed towards the realisation of the total synthesis of the anticancer agent Superstolide A using a transannular Diels-Alder strategy. In 2008, she returned to the Instituto de Química Orgánica General (Madrid, Spain) as a research assistant. In 2011, she started independent research at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as a Ramón y Cajal Fellow. She was recently awarded an ERC-Starting Grant by the European Research Council to work on the project 'Design and applications of unconventional borylation reactions'. Her research interests include boron chemistry, asymmetric catalysis and natural product synthesis. In December 2017, she was promoted to Associate professor.
Her research has received numerous awards, including the Thieme Journal Award (2015), Eli Lilly Young Researcher Award (2014), RSEQ Young Investigator Award 2014, ERC Starting Grant (2013), JSP Fellowship 48th Bürgenstock Conference (2013). As of November 2019, he is an associate editor of the journal ACS Organic Letters. He is also a member of the editorial board of Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. She has published more than 50 articles in journals such as Chem. Sci., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., ACS Catal., Nature Chemistry, Org. Lett. Her H-index is 24 (based on Scopus).
The lecture is organised by the Laboratory of Applied and Sustainable Catalysis of the UAM Centre for Advanced Technology.
