The international interdisciplinary academic conference John Paul II: Read History, Make History is an event dedicated to the analysis of the Polish Pope's role in shaping modern history, his reflections on history and memory, and his activities towards the downfall of communism in Central Europe and world peace.
The conference brings together prominent historians, theologians, philosophers, sociologists and representatives of the humanities and social sciences to review the influence of John Paul II on politics, culture, spirituality and national identity.
Featured speakers include:
- Prof. Hanna Suchocka - Prime Minister of Poland (1992-1993) and Polish Ambassador to the Vatican (2001-2013).
- Prof. Norman Davis - British historian, author of, among others, “God's Playground”
- Lech Walesa - legendary leader of “Solidarność”, President of the Republic of Poland (1990-1995)
- Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering - German politician, President of the European Parliament, (2007-2009)
- H.E. Archbishop Światosław Szewczuk - head of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine
- Prof. Krzysztof Zanussi - Polish film director, screenwriter and producer
- Prof. George Weigel - American writer, author of the most significant biography of J.P.2 "Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Pau"
The conference is organized by the AMU Faculty of History and partners include the Poznan Heritage Center and the Archaeological Museum with its “Genius Loci” division.
The conference is under the patronage of Her Magnificence Rector of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska.
