Honorary Doctorate for Prof. Johannes Müller

The Presentation Ceremony of AMU Honorary Doctorate to Prof. Johannes Muller. The event took place in the Lubrański Hall in the Collegium Minus Building.

Prof. Johannes Müller, one of Germany's most distinguished archaeologists, a scientific authority on the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, and a long-time organiser of Polish-German scientific cooperation, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. The diploma was presented at a ceremony on 8 December.

"Professor Johannes Müller is a world-renowned scholar – an outstanding archaeologist, a tireless researcher conducting projects on several continents, an excellent teacher, a member of various academic bodies in and outside Germany, and a mentor to many young researchers," said Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska, Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, during the ceremony. The Rector also noted that Prof. Johannes Müller's innovative approach to education, especially at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels, is imposing. "Prof. Johannes Müller has been associated with our University for almost 30 years. The collaboration between him, his team, and the University staff is almost daily. Mutual inspiration has borne fruit in the form of joint research projects and publications in renowned scientific journals," emphasised Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska. In her opinion, Prof. Johannes Müller has made a significant contribution to enhancing the international prestige of the AMU. "He is simply one of our closest partners," said Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska.

The doctoral supervisor was Prof. Janusz Czebreszuk from the AMU Faculty of Archaeology. As he said about the Honorary Doctor in his laudatory speech: "Describing all his achievements would require much more time and space. They inspire undisguised admiration. I say this to you not as a rapporteur, but as a witness, aware of the magnitude of this work and the effort put into it, "emphasised Prof. Janusz Czebreszuk. And he added: "He is an open-minded man, though demanding, but first of all towards himself and then towards his colleagues. For him, power, and he has a lot of it, is above all a duty to make decisions. He is a courageous man. It is worth noting that Professor Johannes Müller was the first Western European archaeologist to visit the then-shelled capital of Ukraine in 2022, signing a new cooperation agreement between archaeological institutions in Kyiv and Kiel on the spot," said Prof. Janusz Czebreszuk. "Apart from being a great scientist, he is also a Man with a capital M," he added.

"Professor Johannes Müller is a scientist combining the most valuable qualities in science: a passion for learning, openness to dialogue and an extraordinary ability to unite people around the idea of jointly discovering the past," said Prof. Andrzej Michałowski, Dean of the AMU Faculty of Archaeology. "Today, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, has the honour of welcoming Professor Johannes Müller into its circle of Honorary Doctors. It is an immense privilege and a source of great joy, as this title is being awarded to a scholar whose academic achievements and human kindness have enriched our University for many years," added the Dean.
