Summer School Academic Freedom in Times of War

An international summer school titled “Academic Freedom in Times of War” was held at the Faculty from June 23 to 27, 2025. The event was attended by 30 students coming from Austria, Greece, Poland, Ukraine and Italy

Participants discussed the vision of academic freedom during armed conflict, focusing on the associated threats and protective measures. Activities included lectures, discussions and teamwork concentrating on the effects of war on freedom of research, teaching, knowledge and intellectual freedom. The didactic programme covered topics such as the social determinants of academic freedom, the international-legal regulation of such freedom during armed conflicts, the violations of this freedom by the Russian Federation during the war in Ukraine and the issue of the Index of Academic Freedom.

The school concluded with presentations of team results, where students delivered five detailed and engaging reports on freedom of expression, the right to teach and conduct research, the protection of academic integrity, and the institutional autonomy of universities. The summer school project “Academic Freedom in Times of War” was implemented as part of the Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine initiative (project number: 2023-1-AT01-KA220-HED-000164930)

The coordination on the part of the Faculty was led by Prof.  Bartosz Hordecki, Prof. Anna Potyrała, Prof. Jędrzej Skrzypczak and Dr. Magdalena Bogucewicz.
