The Crocus Hunt has turned into a Winter Challenge

A photo from the snow-covered Tatra Mountains, taken during a crocus-viewing trip that turned into a winter getaway

Over the last few days, a group of 43 of our international students experienced firsthand that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. From 26 to 29 March, the students had a unique opportunity to discover the beauty and unpredictable nature of the Polish mountains, as well as the fascinating, yet sometimes difficult, history of Poland at up close.

At the Wieliczka salt mine, they explored the mysterious underground passages, descending to a depth of 130 meters. In windy Kraków, the students gracefully wandered through the historic streets, undaunted even by the Wawel dragon. Meanwhile, a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Camp provided a difficult history lesson.

The highlight of the trip, however, was the Polish Tatra Mountains, which greeted us with half a metre of snow. Our beloved crocuses had disappeared under the white blanket. However, the sudden change of plans did not dampen our spirits; quite the contrary, equipped with raincoats – or, in this case, snow ponchos – the students set off into the hills to marvel at the winter wonderland and have a little snowball fight.

The weather was freezing, the scenery historic, the views stunning, and the experience truly unforgettable.

The trip was funded under the NAWA grant InterSciencePro - Science Communication i doskonalenie standardów obsługi doktorantów i naukowców cudzoziemców na UAM, BNP/WTP/2023/1/00059
