Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, as a member of the international CAPONEU consortium, cordially invites you to the conference on ‘Political Novel in Europe Between Democracy and Authoritarianism’. Main sessions will be held on 22–24 April 2026 at the AMU Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology in the Mickiewicz Salon under the Dome of Collegium Maius, whilst accompanying literary events will begin on 21 April.
Why do we still need to analyse politics through the prism of the novel? Historically, it has proven to be an exceptionally effective literary form for depicting the complex interplay between pro-democratic and pro-authoritarian tendencies. Therefore, the main subject of interest for the speakers at our conference will be the political novel in Europe (PNE) – understood as an aesthetic space in which the tension between these opposing political tendencies is constantly revealed, described and analysed.
To explore these dynamics comprehensively, the organisers have decided to combine a theoretical approach with a practical one. The programme includes both formal academic panels and engaging public meetings with renowned writers.
A diverse group of experts will discuss the political novel, including:
- literary scholars and political scientists,
- experts in cultural studies,
- decision-makers and politicians with experience at local, national and EU level,
- contemporary writers.
Further details regarding the schedule, speakers and venue can be found in the attached conference programme.
