"You are among friends who want to raise your spirits and assure you that you are not alone. As AMU, we will do our utmost to ease your burden in this difficult time," wrote AMU Rector Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska when Russian troops entered Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Since then, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, has been taking action to support our eastern neighbour, particularly Ukrainian students.
There are currently 695 students from Ukraine studying at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, including 615 full-time students and 80 part-time students (as of 31 December 2024). It is the largest group of international students at AMU.
In addition, under bilateral agreements, AMU hosted 26 people from eight Ukrainian universities during the semester that is just ending. In the coming winter semester, 33 people from 12 universities in Ukraine have announced their arrival.
Among the university initiatives aimed at students and researchers from Ukraine, there are both university-wide and bottom-up initiatives, all undertaken from the heart. The University has repeatedly hosted delegations from Ukrainian universities, supporting the reform of higher education there. AMU students who are citizens of Ukraine can apply for, among other things, the Dr Jan Kulczyk Scholarships. This year, the Chapter selected 10 winners from among the best AMU students from Ukraine (with a minimum grade point average of 4.5). The scholarships, paid for 9 months, amount to PLN 1,000 per month for students of first-cycle master's degree programmes and PLN 1,200 per month for students of second-cycle master's degree programmes. AMU also applied for funds from the National Agency for Academic Exchange for the implementation of a project under the NAWA programme "Solidarity with Ukraine." NAWA financed scholarships for 27 students from Ukraine who, after 24 February 2022, began their studies at AMU as part of a transfer from a Ukrainian university. Since February 2023, over 30 summer schools on various topics have been organised to support the Ukrainian higher education system in its diverse aspects. Since the beginning of the war, AMU has also offered psychological and legal support to students from Ukraine.
It is worth noting that the AMU Organisational Units Libraries organise a regular book fair called "A Brick for Ukraine," and the youngest readers can enjoy books published in Polish and Ukrainian entitled "W zwykłych słowach Wielka MOC" (Great POWER in ordinary words), which are the outcome of a competition organised by the AMU Faculty of Educational Studies. In June 2023, a charity concert entitled "One Voice with Independent Ukraine" was held in the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Auditorium.
In February 2025, a report in Polish on "The commitment of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, to support Ukraine and the Ukrainians after 24 February 2022," [.pdf, 54.1 MB] was published. The publication contains almost 500 items.
